Overview of Agriculture Schemes

The Agricultural Engineering Department (AED) of Tamil Nadu offers 11 subsidy schemes designed to support farmers with irrigation, mechanization, solar energy, and land development.

Who Can Apply?

All farmers in Tamil Nadu including small, marginal, SC/ST, and women farmers are eligible. Some schemes offer enhanced subsidies for SC/ST, small, marginal, and women farmers. Applicants must hold valid land documents and farmer registration.

Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization Project for farm pond construction, supported by World Bank funding.

2 PMKSY - Har Khet Ko Pani Groundwater Irrigation

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana component focused on ensuring water availability to every farm through groundwater-based irrigation infrastructure.

Fully subsidized scheme for creating rainwater harvesting structures on agricultural land to improve water availability during dry seasons.

  • 100% subsidy - zero cost to the farmer for eligible pond construction
  • Designed for rainwater harvesting and storage on farmland
  • Helps in groundwater recharge and soil moisture conservation

4 Electric Motor Pumpsets 50% or ₹10,000

Financial assistance for purchasing new electric motor pumpsets or replacing old, inefficient ones to improve irrigation efficiency.

  • Subsidy of ₹10,000 or 50% of the cost, whichever is less
  • Available for both replacement of old pumpsets and new installations
  • Encourages adoption of energy-efficient motor pumpsets
  • Reduces electricity consumption and operational costs for farmers
  • Covers submersible, centrifugal, and monoblock pumpsets

Eligibility

Farmers with existing bore wells or open wells who need new or replacement electric motor pumpsets. Valid electricity connection required.

5 Land Development Subsidized Machinery

Subsidized machinery hire charges for land shaping, leveling, and cultivation to make uncultivated or poorly maintained land productive.

  • Subsidized hire charges for heavy machinery and equipment
  • Covers land shaping to improve drainage and water flow
  • Land leveling services for uniform water distribution
  • Cultivation support for converting fallow land to productive use

Farmers with agricultural land requiring development work. Both cultivated and uncultivated land holders can apply.

6 Minor Irrigation Subsidized Rental

Subsidized machinery rental for well construction and deepening to improve irrigation access at the farm level.

  • Subsidized machinery rental for construction of new wells
  • Well deepening services at reduced costs
  • Includes bore well drilling and open well construction
  • Supports renovation and repair of existing irrigation structures
  • Helps farmers access deeper groundwater sources
  • Equipment includes rigs, compressors, and dewatering pumps

Eligibility

Farmers who need new wells or deepening of existing wells. Land ownership documents and no-objection certificate from groundwater authority may be required.

7 SMAM (Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization) 50% Subsidy

Central government scheme promoting farm mechanization with enhanced subsidies for marginalized farmer categories.

  • 50% subsidy for SC/ST farmers on agricultural machinery
  • 50% subsidy for small and marginal farmers
  • 50% subsidy for women farmers across all categories

8 Sugarcane Custom Hiring Centres 40% / Max ₹60 Lakh

Establishment of custom hiring centres specifically for sugarcane cultivation machinery, enabling mechanized farming at affordable rates.

  • 40% subsidy on the total cost of establishing the hiring centre
  • Maximum subsidy amount capped at ₹60 lakh
  • Covers sugarcane harvesters, planters, and ratoon management equipment
  • Enables small farmers to access expensive sugarcane machinery

9 Value Addition Machinery Up to 40% Subsidy

10 Solar Powered Pumpsets 70% Subsidy

Major subsidy scheme promoting solar-powered irrigation to reduce electricity costs and carbon footprint in agriculture.

  • 70% of the total cost covered as government subsidy
  • Only 30% contribution required from the farmer
  • Eliminates recurring electricity bills for irrigation
  • Available in capacities ranging from 1 HP to 10 HP
  • Includes solar panels, controller, motor, and mounting structure

11 Solar Fencing Units 40% Back-Ended Subsidy

Back-ended subsidy for installing solar-powered fencing to protect crops from wild animal intrusion, particularly in areas near forests and hills.

  • 40% of total cost provided as back-ended subsidy
  • Protects crops from wild boars, elephants, and other animals
  • Solar-powered system requiring no external electricity
  • Non-lethal electric fence with safety standards compliance
  • Reduces crop damage and economic losses for farmers

  • Includes solar panel, energizer, battery, and fencing wire

Eligibility

Farmers in areas affected by wild animal crop damage, particularly those near forest fringes and hilly regions in Tamil Nadu. Community applications also accepted.

How to Apply

Step-by-step process to apply for agriculture subsidies in Tamil Nadu

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Verify that you meet the eligibility criteria for the specific scheme. Key requirements include valid land ownership documents, farmer registration, and category certificates (if applicable for SC/ST/women farmer benefits).

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

Prepare your Aadhaar card, land documents (patta/chitta/adangal), farmer ID, bank passbook, caste certificate (if applicable), passport-size photographs, and any scheme-specific documents.

Step 3: Submit Application

Applications can be submitted through the AED Tamil Nadu online portal, or at the nearest Agricultural Engineering Department office at the district or block level. Some schemes also accept applications through the Uzhavan app.

Step 4: Verification & Approval

After submission, officials will conduct field verification. Once approved, the subsidy amount will be credited directly to your bank account or released as per the scheme guidelines.
